Between the Ears Expeditions

horse treks rooted in local culture

Where adventure, culture and wild landscapes meet.

We offer hand-picked, locally-operated horse expeditions for those who want authentic and immersive travel.

We ride where local people and life on the land are inextricably tied to horses, crafting experiences that offer a glimpse into another way of life. Whether riding with shepherds through the vast steppe and snow-capped peaks of Central Asia or watching your horse graze in dancing fire shadows while a gaucho prepares asado, horses become the common thread connecting us to cultures around the world. Riding to sweeping lookouts, exploring remote alpine lakes and local homesteads, and racing along with your horse stretched out beneath you — these joys are universal. More importantly, they’re best when shared.

Our rides invite you to know the land more deeply. We work with local operators, guides, and ecotourism projects to create group trips that truly immerse you in place, horse culture, and community.

“I do not have the words to adequately explain the vastness of this landscape or the severity of its mountains or how on the back of a horse it felt like you could gallop so far you’d fall off the edge of the earth…. Back in the modern world, it’s an intoxicating flavor I can’t forget.”

Türkiye Field Notes

“Cappadocia was a spur-of-the-moment, "yes." Long days riding (sometimes flying) in the saddle with strangers who quickly became friends.

The call to prayer woke us each morning as it wove through the valleys. Steam rose from one of many glasses of Turkish chai.

Above me, a sea of balloons drifted across a painted sky at dawn. Below, the earth shared stories of volcanic eruptions and the weathering of time. Tuff shaped into fairy chimneys, pillars, and cave homes carved with intention.

I felt suspended between traces of historic civilizations, valleys shaped by generations, and the present I rode through.”

Argentina Field Notes

“After several hours of riding down sharp ridge lines, across open valleys full of weightless golden dust, and through deep swaths of thick interlacing brush (a thin path emerging step by step behind the gaucho and his machete) we arrived at a small sheltering forest beside the river where we would make camp for the night. The river wrapped around the bank in a wide curve —the bend of which was the tell-tale cerulean of water deep enough to swim in.

That evening, under the canopy of trees, the neighbor and a few of his family members arrived with a pack horse carrying all the makings of another asado for dinner and we sat around our little campfire eating bread that we toasted on the coals and drinking wine and maté and chatting.”

The community

Between the Ears Expeditions began after we spent eight weeks riding on our own through northern Patagonia with three horses. The thrill of the trek and the people we met along the way inspired us to build a community for those who want similar experiences in shorter doses.

Our trips are tailored for riders who are intermediate or above and comfortable moving at all gaits across varied terrain. Equally important, we ask that you love the outdoors deeply, possess a sense of adventure in embracing wild spots and new cultures, and want to connect with the people around you.

We offer set itineraries and customize group trips to arrange the multi-day ride of your dreams. Don’t hesitate to reach out with inquiries. We can’t wait to have you along to see the world the way we think it’s best seen — between the ears of a horse.
